What Does a Lawsuit Have to do With these Photos?
In 2022, Pilates instructor Mary Kelly was sued in federal court by Sean Gallagher for posting historical photos on Instagram. Since then the worldwide community has rallied together to fundraise and raise awareness of the threat to Pilates teachers and studios globally. In order to protect the industry for the future, this lawsuit must go forward. The courts must ultimately determine the status of any copyright ownership over our collective Pilates history. With that clarity, the industry will know what can be posted, what can be shared and what ultimately may be freely researched.
The lawsuit led to the discovery of these photos. And the proceeds of these sales go straight to the lawyers to defend this suit. The volunteers who help Mary Kelly donate their time and efforts for free and are collectively known as the Pilates Transparency Project.
